When one learns to respect life, one naturally becomes non-violent and compassionate.
Buddha's teaching are Ahimsa non-violence or causing pain or suffering to anyone, hence ancient times all Buddha's followers were vegetarian. Many Buddhists would even go as far as sweeping the path before they walked to brush the ants out of their way, as to not step on them and cause them to suffer.
LIVING YOGA IS AHIMSA:
When we look into the eyes of our pet cat or dog we can clearly see that in that animals eyes in a person a living being looking back at me. Animals are just as much "alive" as we are, they feel pain, loneliness, love, happiness and sadness just as we do. As one begins practicing the path of yoga we gradually become more conscious and compassionate, and ultimately realize that we need to make personal changes and sacrifices in order to live our truth and actually love and care about others.
Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.
Albert Einstein
CULTIVATING COMPASSION:
Cultivating unconditional love and compassion starts at home. Truly Living Yoga means living Ahimsa, caring about others by making the conscious decision to stop taking part in the violence against animals and other living beings. We make that choice everyday with everything we put on our plates and into our mouths. By choosing a vegetarian or vegan diet we are choosing the path of peace and compassion, from which we can be clearer in our relationships with others and personal practice, being less burdened by the karma surrounding meat eating. Living Yoga then becomes a fast moving process of self purification, where naturally we begin to see our connection and relationship with others and the world around us more clearly. As Mahatma Gandhi said “be the change you want to see in the world " That change begins with me, I am voting for what kind of world I live in every time I eat.
To truly live yoga we need to live Ahimsa- we need to start caring about others.
